Across different countries and traditions, questions are increasingly being raised about the future of Buddhism in contemporary society. Is Buddhism truly in decline, or is it simply changing in response to modern conditions?
In this lecture, Dr. Hun Lye will examine historical, cultural, and social perspectives surrounding Buddhism’s development in the modern era. Participants will explore how Buddhist traditions adapt to changing societies, the challenges faced by contemporary Buddhist communities, and what these shifts may mean for the future of Buddhist practice and understanding.
Blending scholarship with lived Buddhist experience, Dr. Hun Lye brings clarity and nuance to an important and timely discussion relevant to both practitioners and the wider public.
Dr. Hun Lye grew up in a Buddhist home in Malaysia and studied and practiced Buddhism from a young age with teachers from various traditions.
After earning a doctorate degree in Buddhist Studies at the University of Virginia and teaching for ten years in American academic institutions, Dr. Lye devoted himself fully to Dharma work.
In 2013, he was appointed as a Dorjé Lopön of the Drikung Kagyü Lineage by His Holiness Drikung Kyabgön Chetsang Rinpoche and continues to teach internationally while serving Buddhist communities across Asia and North America.
