About the Lecture
Vegetarianism is widely associated with Chinese Buddhism today, but how did this tradition develop, and why did it become such an important aspect of Chinese Buddhist identity?
In this lecture, Dr. Pu Cheng Zhong will trace the historical formation of Buddhist vegetarian practices in China, examining the religious, ethical, cultural, and social influences that shaped this uniquely Chinese Buddhist tradition.
Participants will gain deeper insight into Buddhist ethics, Chinese Buddhist history, and the evolving relationship between food, compassion, and spiritual practice across different historical periods.
This lecture offers both scholarly depth and accessible perspectives for anyone interested in Buddhism, Chinese religious culture, ethics, and history.
Dr. Pu Cheng Zhong received his PhD in Religious Studies from SOAS, University of London, specializing in Chinese Buddhism, Buddhist ethics, and Dunhuang Buddhist manuscripts.
He has taught and conducted research at institutions including the Buddhist College of Singapore, National University of Singapore (part-time), Leiden University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shanghai University, Ghent University, and The University of Hong Kong.
He is currently a researcher at the Hong Kong Bodhi Society and a professor at the Hong Kong Tung Lam Pure Land Institute.
